WHAT IS A "REAL ALE"?
It's a fact that real (actually cask) ales are in fashion. While there's doom and gloom about pubs closing at a frightening rate, it's also a fact that comsumption of cask ale is on the up. So what is a "Cask Ale"? Put simply, it's beer, or lager, brewed the way nature intended with no additives or preservatives to spoil the taste, or extra gas to make you belch. It's got four ingredients, water, malt, yeast and hops. All natural and good for you. So all you get is a great tasting pint.
The CAMpaign for Real Ale was started in 1971 with an aim to keep real beer making alive in the face of a flood of artificially made "keg" beers. They have branches all around the country and each produces an excellent magazine. Sheffield has one of the most active branches in the country and their excellent magazine "Beer Matters", reports and promotes everything to do with real ale and the pubs that sell it in the region . It's available in most pubs that sell real ale in the area.
